About UsThe Kai Kitchen Trust Founded 22nd April 2015
One evening in 2015 we were made aware of a family of children in South Taranaki who had no school lunches for the following school day, Rochelle "Founder" made her way to the children's school and spoke with the principal to check on the children's wellbeing. After a short discussion Rochelle had made a promise to make and deliver school lunches to this family of children each school day. We didn't want these children to feel pin pointed so lunches were made and delivered into school for all the children involved in the breakfast in schools program on the 22nd April 2015 lunches where made for 12 students at 1 primary school. On realizing that if there was 1 family of children without lunch that maybe there was more !!! All schools in the area were approached, with in a week there was 24 lunches made each day and 3 schools involved, Then 38 lunches made at 6 schools. It was growing fast. Rochelle, her family and friends were funding this but as lunches grew so did the cost. A Facebook page was made to call for help from the local community. The support was outstanding. We were then approached from the local High School for help, 12 students going hungry each school day, High School wasn't something we had thought about, of course we would help! Schools who are decile 4 and above have no government assistance to help hungry children. Our schools, teachers, Govt agencies and social service providers identify the children who are on our lunch lists, we work along side these schools and agencies to help children in our communities. Today we currently cover South Taranaki and Central Taranaki, 17 schools are visited daily with 110+ lunches made each school day. The Kai Kitchen Trust has made over 65'000 school lunches in just 4 years and 10 months. We continue with help from amazing Donations, Grants and Fundraising efforts. |
